Quick Start

This page gets you from zero to one working download in the smallest number of steps that still respect how J2Commerce actually stores files. If you skip the product setup and jump straight to the shortcode, you will stare at an empty article and blame the plugin. Do the shop work first.

Before you touch the shortcode

Confirm J2Commerce is installed and that you can open a downloadable product in the administrator, attach a file, and set the base price to zero. Download plg_content_rca_j2c_directdownload version 1.0.7 or newer from https://recreatinganew.com. Note the numeric product ID from the J2Commerce product edit screen. You will paste that ID into the shortcode.

Install and enable the plugin

Log in as a Super User or another account that may install extensions. Open System → Install → Extensions and upload the ZIP. Wait for success. The installer enables the content plugin automatically. Open System → Plugins and search for RCA J2C Direct Download if you want visual confirmation.

If the installer warns that the J2Commerce store component folder is missing, stop and install or repair J2Commerce first. The plugin integrates through the same J2Store-compatible APIs and tables J2Commerce continues to expose on current releases.

Prepare one qualifying product

Open your J2Commerce product list and edit the target product. Set product type to downloadable. Set the base price to zero in the currency you use for storefront pricing. Attach at least one product file using J2Commerce’s product file fields. Publish the product. If your site uses per-product direct download overrides, set direct download to allowed or use global. A product-level block overrides a globally enabled plugin.

Place the shortcode and test

Edit the Joomla article where the download should appear. In the body, insert a shortcode block such as , replacing 123 with your product ID. Save the article. View the article on the front end while logged out and while logged in if guest rules matter to you. Click DOWNLOAD NOW once and confirm the file arrives with the expected MIME type.

Do not put the J2Commerce cart shortcode for the same product on the same page unless you deliberately want two competing calls to action. Pick direct download or checkout for that landing page.

Default plugin options for a first test

For a typical public lead magnet, leave Enable Direct Free Downloads on, set Allow Guest Downloads to Yes, leave Track Downloads on, and leave Use J2Commerce Order Tracking on Auto unless you have a reason to force Yes or No. Auto creates a free J2Commerce order for logged-in users who have an email on the account. Guests use ledger tracking when guest downloads are allowed; the plugin does not invent guest orders with fake emails.

When the quick start fails

If Super Users see a hint on the page but the public sees nothing, read the admin-only message. It usually names the eligibility failure: not free, not downloadable, missing file, or direct download disabled on the product. Fix the product in J2Commerce and reload. If guests see a login message, Allow Guest Downloads is off. Either turn it on or expect registration before download.
